Chommies at Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2025: A Celebration of Play
Play is mischief. It’s curiosity. It’s a rebellion against the predictable.
At the 2025 Investec Cape Town Art Fair, where the theme was ‘Play,’ Chommies fully embraced the spirit of spontaneity, bringing joy, colour, and a touch of irreverence to the scene.
Speel-Speel: A Capsule Collection
Inspired by the fair’s theme, we introduced Speel-Speel, we wanted to create something that lets people feel the energy of play—not just see it.
Because play isn’t a thing. It’s a feeling.
The collection featured an adjustable collar, the everyday leash, and a limited-edition tote bag designed with Peet Pienaar—each piece a celebration of joy.
VIP Bags: When Peet Pienaar Plays
In collaboration with South African design icon Peet Pienaar, Chommies designed the official VIP bags for the fair, with Peet weaving together layers of meaning beneath a seemingly lighthearted scene of dogs at play.
“I wanted something that’s playful on the surface but carries deeper cultural and historical influences,” he explained. “Dogs are universal. They cross boundaries, unite people, and hold different meanings in different cultures.”
What at first glance seemed like a whimsical celebration of canine antics revealed itself as something more—a visual conversation about history, culture, and the connections we share

Our booth itself was an extension of this theme—designed to embody play in both form and function. The layout drew inspiration from the lines of a sports field. The space was a dynamic meeting ground, where visitors didn’t just browse but engaged.
We showcased furniture from our friends at Innova, bringing an element of contemporary craftsmanship into the mix, and our custom sales desk—crafted by local designer Joshua Phillips—anchored the space. Every detail was considered to create an experience that blurred the lines between retail, art, and design.

Through our partnership with the Investec Cape Town Art Fair and Peet Pienaar, we blurred the lines between design and art, utility and imagination. Because who says practical things can’t also be poetic?
More than just an exhibition, Chommies at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair was a reminder that play is power. It’s how we connect. It’s how we imagine. And, most importantly, it’s how we make the world just a little more fun.
