How Well Do You Know Your Chommies?

The Mountain Dude

Marcus & Echo

Marcus likes: Carabiners, Jungle Oats, and Rassie Erasmus
Echo likes: Sleeping bag naps, driftwood, and eye contact

Marcus wakes up with the mountain on his mind, breeze drifting through the fynbos. Years ago, he found a waterfall near Devil’s Peak and still keeps a bar of Sunlight soap hidden up there under a rock for showers ‘the way the good Lord intended: not a loofah in sight.’ Echo, his border collie, is polite in these moments and mostly looks the other way.

Driving around with a Tupperware of his mom’s rusks on his lap and Echo in the passenger seat, this dude is the world’s most contented man. Echo echoes the sentiment, catches Marcus’ eye, and gives him a wink.

The Countryside Queen

Lily & Milo

Lily likes: Moonlit nights, Cat Stevens, and Joko
Milo likes: Mud, fireplace naps, and chasing flying ants

After being blocked from Newlands Forest one too many times by race-day road closures, Lily and Milo left the city, never to return. Country life suits them much better – it’s like the Oranjezicht Market’s fresh produce tent, except it never ends and there are fewer people trying to give you balsamic vinegar tasters. However, Milo does concede that the vinegar is unnervingly good.

Now they wake up with the sunrise to delicate birdsong. Oh no wait, that’s just the birdsong alarm tone on Lily’s phone, and she’s going to be late again for the 08:30 meeting (hey, someone’s gotta pay for this Barrydale farmhouse). Milo spends her mornings sighing and moving with the patch of sunlight on the stoep. Soon, it’ll be time for Lily’s tea break and they’ll head out to sniff butts and pick flowers for the kitchen table.

Up to you to work out who’ll be doing what.

The City Boy

Xander & Pierre

Xander likes: Himself, priority boarding, and Princess Diana
Pierre likes: Himself, puppuccinos, and parlour visits

The only one who spends more time getting ready to go out than Xander is Pierre, his Viszla. Both divas, both gorgeous, you’d think these boys were getting ready for a cover shoot, not a cappuccino. But who are we kidding, of course there’ll be a photographer there – Xander’s boyfriend-turned-PA is already setting up outside Lello’s Deli.

There’s just one roll in their life, and it belongs to Xander’s iPhone camera – Xander and Pierre are both working with/slaving for a trainer to get ready for beach season, and carbs are strictly forbidden.

Forget Clifton, they’re headed for California. Pierre consults with dogs in the film industry to help them find their perfect angle, and he’s got a bone to pick with one of his clients for drooling in a scene.

The Beach Babe

Alexis & Sierra

Alexis likes: The Curly Girl Method, Wim Hof, and free shipping
Sierra likes: Panting, peanut butter, and sticking her head out the window

Alexis and Sierra spend Cape Town’s winter months disoriented and depressed. But at the first hint of summer, they’re back where they belong: butts in Beta’s sand, backs against its convenient wall.

Sierra’s a bit of a stickler for public by-laws about nudity. For a dog who doesn’t wear clothes, she’s kind of a hypocrite. To protest all the full-coverage bronzing going on, she steals a packet of Woolies cheese puffs from someone’s towel and shares it with a seagull behind a boulder.
